1. Snow cream is a dessert similar to ice cream.

The only difference between snow cream and ice cream is that snow cream is made with snow crystals.

2. Chilled utensils for optimal snow cream

Before making your snow cream, ensure that the bowl and the spoon used to collect the “snow powder” are thoroughly chilled. Place your bowl and spoon outside to cool or freeze before making snow cream.

3. Snow quality

Make sure there are no contaminants in the snow; avoid collecting the first snowfall, as it gathers various debris from the atmosphere during its development. As it descends and lands on the ground, it can become contaminated with chemicals or pesticides. It’s advisable to wait for the second or third snowfall to ensure the collection of fresh and uncontaminated snow

Note: avoid yellow or any form of discolored snow.

4. Perfect consistency

To prepare the ideal snow cream it is best to pay meticulous attention to the form, size, and temperature of the snow.

According to a research article:

  • Temperature +1°C-isn’t suitable because it can give crunchy, grain results with poor consistency.
  • Temperature: -2°C/-3°C- has good scooping density-size-2.5mm /1.5mm (preferred)
  • Temperature 1°C — Milkshake consistency

5. Basic snow cream recipe without condensed milk and vanilla

  • 1 large bowl of freshly fallen snow.
  • 1 cup thick cream or rich whole milk
  • ½ cup sugar or honey
  • Maple flavoring, if necessary

Mix thick cream or rich whole milk and sugar/honey and add maple flavoring if desired. Put the snow into individual serving bowls and pour the mixture or liquid prepared earlier over the top. (a tablespoon of the liquid mixture would suffice for each serving bowl).

6. Recommended liqueurs for snow cream:

  • creme de cassis (black currant)
  • Kahlua (coffee)
  • creme de coconut
  • peppermint schnapps
  • Cointreau (orange)
  • Drambuie
  • Frangelico (hazelnut)
  • Irish cream

7. Non -Alcoholic flavorings for snow cream

  • Vanilla extract
  • Cocoa powder
  • Hot chocolate powder
  • Fruit jams or jellies (huckleberry, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, etc..)
  • Caramel sauce
  • Finely ground coffee

8. Do not add artificial vanilla, it will crystallize in contact with snow and result in a disappointing texture.

9. It is recommended to add fresh berries to your snow cream right before consumption rather than in advance. This is due to the water content in fresh berries, which can crystallize upon contact with the snow, potentially resulting in a more granular and less desirable product.

10. According to research, snow cream is a thousand-year-old dessert. It is mentioned that consuming snow cream is a Southern tradition. They celebrate the year’s first snowfall by enjoying snow cream with milk, sugar, and any flavor.
